Phillip "Hoppy" Ray Strickland
03/18/1952 - 11/27/2024
Phillip Ray Strickland ("Hoppy"), 72, passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
Hoppy was a beloved father, grandfather, and husband, known for his humor, strong work ethic, and passion for the outdoors. He grew up in Houston and attended Bellaire High School, where he met his future wife, Susie. The two married on August 17, 1974, and shared 48 years together.
After completing his education at the University of Texas in 1975, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha and the Texas Cowboys, Hoppy and Susie returned to Houston in 1976, where Hoppy accepted a job in the petrochemical industry.
In 1981, the couple moved to San Antonio, where they raised their son, Keil, and became members of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church.
Hoppy was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Watson Strickland, and his parents, Jacqueline Frank Strickland and William Harry Strickland. He is survived by his son, Keil Strickland, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany Strickland; his adored grandchildren, Carter, Will, and Ben, who lovingly called him "Pops;" his sister, Pam Merkin of Sunnyvale, Texas; and his brother, David Strickland of Cincinnati, Ohio.
An avid outdoorsman, Hoppy found joy in bay fishing, bird hunting, and exploring America's national parks. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandsons, sharing adventures and enjoying their time together.
A private family service will be held in Weimar, Texas, to honor Hoppy's life and legacy.

So very sorry to hear of Hoppy's passing. It seems that everyone in our class either knew or knew of Hoppy. He had great sense of humor and was a very nice man. It was great to visit with him at our reunions. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

I will echo David Hill's comments on Hoppy, a great guy, a leader then and now, and one of the best of our class. I can't help but think Sue's passing last year led in part to Hoppy's passing at such a young age. Yes, he will be missed but I know he will be well-remembered.

Sorry to hear it. Hoppy was a great classmate and the live wire of the group. He was always there to put a smile on your face. He will be greatly missed.
