Obituary

Richard (Rick) E. Byers, 64, of Houston, TX, succumbed to colon cancer at home surrounded by his family on December 26, 2015.

Rick is survived by his wife Donna of 34 years, son James (Jamie) R. Byers, daughter Kimberly L. Andy (Byers), sister Nancy L. Hastings (Byers), brother-in-law, Louis E. Hastings, grandchildren, nephews, and extended family. Rick was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. He is preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) E. Byers and Carmen S. Byers (Starbuck).

Rick loved carpentry and owned his own general contracting business for 37+ years until he was forced to stop due to his illness. He enjoyed sports and played tennis and football in his younger years. He coached and sponsored several youth baseball teams. He also enjoyed cooking and reading.

He served as a board member and as President for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Rick was always there to help friends and family with carpentry projects or whatever else they needed him for.

We want to give special thanks to the exceptional nurses at the Memorial Hospital, Memorial City oncology floor for their diligence and care. Also, we want to thank Angelica with Silverado Hospice for her loving compassion.

Funeral services were held at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home in the chapel on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Following the service Rick was laid to rest at the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

What an incredible man Rick was. You seldom see the special type of love that he and Donna Wecker Byers held for each other. Rick will be missed greatly.

I knew Rick through a 46-year association with his wife, Donna. Rick was the type of person that I wished I could have developed a closer friendship with. Living in Philadelphia prevented me from doing that, but I was always impressed with how much I felt at ease around him, how well he took care of Donna, how much knowledge he had of the construction industry, and how patiently he bore medical and financial issues. We also shared a common bond in terms of our conservative opinions. We both appreciated the values of the younger and less complicated America we grew up in. He will be sorely missed!
